So many choices
Understanding what the assignment is can never be a bad thing. For the most part, I knew we were doing a blog and that's about it. I had a lot of questions about what goes where and what's expected. Moodle was a great resource because I was able to reference back to it as often as I wanted.
The topic of knowledge of conventions is pretty simple. It's just understanding what the rules are. I'm not going to write in a conversational tone when typing up my microbiology lab reports. It's all about knowing when things are appropriate and applying these guidlines.
The daybook didn't really have too many rules. I was able to use it as a crutch to better my blog. Knowledge of convetions played a huge role in how I organized my entire eportfolio. The digital essay had the most requirements, I think. The blog portion did have some guidlines but I was able to write freely with my LOI. I was able to choose what I wanted to talk about, how I wanted to talk about it, I just needed it to be in a blog form. I did have some requirements as far as research goes but that's expected. You can't just give college kids the ability to choose how their assignment ends up, how could that ever get graded?
All in all, knowledge of conventinos was a fairly simple thing to catch on to. Follow what's on moodle and you'll do okay. I've always been the kind of student who needed a lot of structure in the assignment. I need to know exactly what to do and how to do it. This allowed me to show some creativity but I'm still not sure how I feel about being able to make so many choices! Some may think that was easier but nooooo, I need to be told what to do!
Knowledge of Conventions
Rules and guidlines that define genre. It's the ability to understand "correctness" and apply it to writing.
